Are you thinking this is the plot for most of these types of books? You’d be right. Except that as told by K.A. Tucker, it comes to life with excitement and freshness that unfolds in a magical way.
ACoB&S does a good job of laying out the pieces like breadcrumbs that I eagerly followed. It also gives us a front-row seat to the push and pull going on between Zander and Romy. God, the angst is yay high, and I loved it. Zander’s allies would like a piece of Romy, but he’s completely resolute in his decision to protect her. That makes his negotiations and road back to Cirilea complicated. He’s rightfully angry and he lets Romy know it. It’s ok; she knows how to handle herself.
During the journey, we are introduced to a new cast of characters. No, they aren’t just filler – they’re pretty awesome. The story deepens. New abilities emerge. We get a fuller picture of how these characters and their lives entwine into the lives of humans. I loved how their world and points of view expanded. I was imagining those battle scenes and could almost hear the swords clanging against each other.
Character development is A+. Worldbuilding is too. The spice level is a definite slow burn but I’m patient and I’m betting the payoff is going to be epic. But wait! There’s more! Tucker is not done with the twists and turns. All this intrigue and fantasy sprinkled with treachery and heavy doses of heartbreak is a winning combination in my eyes.
