(A re-imagining of The Fallen Star told as a New Adult Paranormal)
For twenty-one year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. She knows nothing about her past and has been haunted by the same monsters in her nightmares for the last few months. Unemotional and numb to life, she feels disconnected from everyone. Until the very first day she cries. After that, nothing in her life is the same.
Her emotions slowly surface and she starts experiencing love, happiness, and anger, feelings she never knew existed. But they leave her confused and she doesn’t know whether to embrace them or run away from them.
Her life only gets more complicated when she meets Alex. Sexy, arrogant, and secretive, Alex can get under Gemma’s skin like no one can. Yet she’s drawn to him by an invisible connection she has no control over. She’s also seen him before. In her nightmares.
Every part of Gemma’s mind is screaming at her to stay away from Alex, but every other part of her is begging to get close to him. But the closer she gets, the more she realizes Alex knows more about her than he originally let on.
As secrets about her past unravel, Gemma’s life becomes threatened. She needs to figure out what’s going on, before she winds up dead. But the only person she can turn to for answers is the one person she isn’t sure she can trust.
Our Reviews
Abby: About a year ago, I was just discovering how much I love my e-reader and the extra fun social media brings into reading. I just finished book 3 in The Dark Secret Series and I was suffering from a serious book hangover. I was on The Dark Secret Series Facebook page complaining about how I was stuck and what to read that would compare and one of her fans suggested the Fallen Star series by Jessica Sorensen.
I read The Fallen Star Series, loved it, and immediately became a fan of Jessica’s, reading everything from her.
Shattered Promises is an older more mature version of The Fallen Star series.
Now since it has been about a year since my Fallen Star experience, reading Shattered Promises was like remembering a really good reoccurring dream but things were different then you remembered.
This was a unique experience for me. I felt connected to the characters as soon as I started reading because of my previous experience. It occurred to me that this could be a very different experience for Fallen Star enthusiast. What was different for me is some things were how I remembered and some things were very different. Aislin is Alex’s sister. In the original I remember feeling like she and Gemma were good friends, I did not get that sense in this one. I also think I liked Alex more originally, I was having a hard time deciding if I liked him this time because of this book or because of the first series. It was okay that these things were different because this is a series and I think if I were reading it for the first time I wouldn’t be expecting those relationships the way I was. It was just different.
I loved The Fallen Star Series so this is like icing on the cake, a nice extra surprise that will keep you wanting more.
Dawn here…I’ll start off by saying I had no history with Jessica Sorensen’s Fallen Star Series. I love that we get to bring you two different perspectives on this!
This is the first book in the re-imagining of the series and I had no preconceptions of what the story might be like or what to expect. What I do know now is that I was hooked from the very beginning into Gemma’s life as she is thrown into feeling emotions for the first time in her 21 years of life. And not just a little emotion here and there – these ones are knock-her-on-her-ass emotions! As she battles to understand why she is feeling them and what they mean, she meets up with Alex and Aislin, who have their own secrets. Alex runs hot and cold around Gemma and he just frustrated me so much!! Yet, I fell just a little in love with him through Gemma’s eyes! And let’s just say it…Jessica Sorensen can write a hot scene! Whew! Bonus for reading the more mature version! 😉
And then there is Laylen. *sigh* He stole a little piece of my heart too! I cannot wait to see how he fits into Gemma’s life as the series progresses. Jessica introduces us to freakish creatures who breathe ice and are hell bent on getting to Gemma along with a sexy vampire, some fairies, Dark Angels, witches, and more. Sometimes when you have so many different creatures running around in a book, it can be confusing…I never felt this way in Shattered Promises.
I love how all the parts are woven together into a beautifully drawn story that although much is resolved by the end, there was still so much left to bring me back when the next book arrives.I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

I haven’t read The Fallen Star series but I’ve seen it mentioned so much I’ll be adding it to my TBR pile 🙂
if you like a younger read then read the fallen star series, but if you like to read a little more mature then stick with Shattered Promises, it is a reimaging a little more mature than Fallen Star
