Review: NEANDERTHAL SEEKS HUMAN by Penny Reid
This is a full-length, 110k word novel and is the first book in the Knitting in the City series.
There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: 1) She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and 3) She doesn’t know how to knit.
After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can’t help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan- aka Sir McHotpants- witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can’t afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn- the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies- to make her an offer she can’t refuse.
Dawn’s Review 5 Stars
I’ll admit, at first the name of this book had me wondering what I was getting myself into with reading it but let me just say, I could not put this book down!! I was supposed to be preparing for vacation and I kept finding ways to sneak read so I could stay in Janie and Quinn’s world! Once you’ve read it, you’ll completely understand the meaning behind the title and it’s perfect!
Funny, quirky, sexy characters make up this book and I found myself laughing out loud, shaking my head with the zany moments, and wanting to be invited to join the knitting night. I’d be with Janie though – not knitting, just there for the friendships. What awesome friendships, too! And when Janie had those fantastic moments of trivia word vomit, I wanted to smack my head with a bit of embarassment for her and giggle with her at the same time.
Penny Reid’s voice is refreshing and real. I loved how she captured the interactions between Quinn and Janie. Their moments of banter and sexy times were just what I needed. And Quinn, mmm, he’s super sexy, Sir McHotpants!! I adored his complete enchantment (and sometimes seeming consternation) with Janie.
But we all drag our history with us to a degree and both Janie and Quinn have histories that have potential of keeping them from their happily ever after. As I was rooting for them, I was also biting my nails worried for them! And then crap, something happens and I wanted to toss my smartphone (which I was sneak reading on) out the car window!! In the end, I found myself smiling and laughing, and knowing that this is a book I will go back to and read again.
Overall, a fun, sassy, sexy, smart romance that kept me reading long after I should have been asleep! This is book one in the Knitting in the City series and I’ll be ready to dive into the second one as soon as it’s available.
Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.
I’m originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family. I work full time in the biotech industry as a researcher. I work a lot. I’m also a full time mom to two diminutive adults (boy-5 and girl-3), wife, daughter, knitter, crocheter, sewer, general crafter, and thought hijacker.
I don’t like to sit still unless I’m writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group… or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I’m trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.
The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months.
