Review: FRIENDS WITHOUT BENEFITS (Knitting in the City #2) by Penny Reid
Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book#2 in the Knitting in the City Series.
There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she’s unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth’s plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.

Dawn’s Review 4 Stars
I love the quirky, REAL people that Penny writes. I found that in her first book, Neanderthal Seeks Human, and Friends Without Benefits was no different. The banter and dialogue leads you along throughout the entire story and kept me involved with all of the characters.
If you have read NSH (or even if you haven’t), Friends without Benefits brings back the same cast of characters but focuses this time on Elizabeth. And Nico. Nico freaking Manganiello. Elizabeth is a doctor who specialized in childhood diseases after having lost someone close to her when she was younger.
Elizabeth hasn’t seen Nico in years but he shows up at the hospital needing her help. What progresses from there is fun, sexy, and full of heart. There were moments when I laughed out loud at the hilarity of Elizabeth’s thoughts and ached for what she had experienced growing up.
Nico, he’s smokin’ hot man candy but at times I wanted to smack him for his earlier teenage stupidity and his actions that impacted both himself and Elizabeth. I did love seeing his vulnerable side. I almost didn’t want to love him but I couldn’t help myself!!
As with NSH, I loved the knitting group and all the different personalities! It was fun having them back in FwoB. Penny Reid also introduced me to the Panty Dance Party in FwoB. I’ll be rounding up my girls to have one when I need it! Additionally, one of the things I love about Penny’s books is they tend to be a longer read and there are so many moments of fun and laughter along with the serious. It is as if the characters are my friends and I’m hanging out (not knitting) with them! Oh, and I loved the little twist in the story of a ‘choose your own’ chapter like when you had that option as a kid. Of course, just like when I was a kid, I couldn’t not read both!! I found them both to be super hot and sexy!

Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.
I’m originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family. I work full time in the biotech industry as a researcher. I work a lot. I’m also a full time mom to two diminutive adults (boy-5 and girl-3), wife, daughter, knitter, crocheter, sewer, general crafter, and thought hijacker.
I don’t like to sit still unless I’m writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group… or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I’m trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.
The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months.
If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others.
