Kerry’s 4.5 Blush Review
I’m not big on teacher/student romance, but I never excepted this from EK Blair. She has really surprised me with this one. It’s different than I anticipated. I was invested in this book. The author hit on some deeply emotional topics which could include triggers involving self-harm and suicide.
Louisa’s 3.5 Blush Review
EK Blair’s last two books were YA. Not the usual read for me but EK is one of my favorite authors. This book was heart-wrenching, heartbreaking and uplifting at times. I know, a strange mix of emotions for a book.
Cam has a devasting accident that changes her life forever. David feels responsible for the accident and he NEEDS to be there for Cam. Being her teacher/coach isn’t why he’s there for her, he’s there because he knows that the loss she has endured is more than one can handle. Her relationships with friends and her mother decline as she slowly falls into a state in which she can’t get out. Only one person can help her crawl back to some semblance of normalcy back into a life that will never be normal.
David has endured a loss that has changed him forever, his need to care for Cam comes from a beautiful place. However, their relationship is forbidden; as a teacher/coach, he just shouldn’t go there. There is more to their relationship than sex, there is a deep love and understanding that each need but they know that the “outside” world will never understand.
I was crying by chapter 3 and I think with each chapter I read, I continued to have mixed emotions. I did become invested in the connection between these two characters but I think I wanted just a little more. I wanted more build up to their connection and I wanted more from Cam’s relationship with her friends and mother. This was a book that may have triggers for some, but a book that needed to be written to give a voice to many teens who are dealing with depression and loss.
Blair, takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster with her books. Blair
tends to drift towards love stories that are deeply layered with emotional
angst. Give her a character and she will dig into their core to find what lies
Aside from writing, E.K. Blair finds pleasure in music, drinking her Starbucks
in peace and spending time with her friends and family. She’s a thinker, an artist,
a wife, a mom, and everything in between.
