I’m a big KP fan. I’ve never read anything by her that I didn’t enjoy. Underboss, I’m happy to tell you, is no exception. It is thrilling to me when authors expand their art into new areas. Now we have a whole new branch of the With Me series! How is this author that is known for swoony heroes and snappy banter going to dive into the world of Mafia romance? Let’s get into it and I’ll tell you.
Carmine Martinelli is the oldest son of the prominent Martinelli family. He’s as calculating and cunning as he is gorgeous. He’s bent on revenge and has his target in sight. The princess of the family responsible for the death of his aunt and uncle. Too bad she’s going to turn out to be a little harder to handle than he imagined.
Nadia Tarenkov is not your typical female protagonist. She is underestimated because of her gender and hampered by her birth order. She is a woman with a plan. The princess of the Tarenkov family aims to head it and become queen of the underworld.
Carmine and Nadia meet as children at a “family’ wedding. Little Nadia is warned by her father to stay away from that Martinelli boy. Montague/Capulet much? Not exactly, more like frenemies.
Carmine is motivated by needing to avenge the murders of his aunt and uncle. Nadia, is no damsel in distress. Her future role has always been clear to her. Then the first boy she ever kissed comes back into her life and her carefully laid scheme is in jeopardy. Both are guarded individuals that think they have the upper hand until they realize that something else is going on between them. Suddenly it’s not a game anymore. Is it real? Is it an act? Each one fighting for control. Can he trust her? Could she kill him?

Yes please! There is genuine warmth between them. I got caught up in it myself and smiled at their interactions.
Unbeknownst to them, there are other players in this game. Trouble hides in the shadows with no qualms about removing anyone that gets in their way. Carmine and Nadia realize they must work together for the sake of both their families.
In the With Me series, Kristen writes alphas that have this protective center and heroines that have a surety of themselves. Who doesn’t love the enemies to lover’s trope? Throw in great locations, romance, heat, danger and two strong characters that give as good as they get and it’s a recipe for a binge read. Underboss (Book 1 of 3: With Me In Seattle Mafia) is not as dark and violent as most of this genre BUT the plot twist works.
I promise, you will be entertained.
