Over-saturated unoriginal indie world
Last week I read a blog post that talked about how a few years back Indie was it; this magical place and how happy one click 99 cent deals have saturated the market, and there are so many wannabe authors with unoriginal ideas and that are not edited right. There were a lot of good things in this article, some I could totally see her point, but this was one theme.
I DON’T BUY THIS FOR A SECOND!!!
I just read Nocte by Courtney Cole. AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT AND ORIGINAL
How about Black Lies by Alessandra Torre
What about Michelle Valentine’s Phenomenal X, (A wrestler, seriously who would have thought.)
There are so many Indie authors that are constantly shocking us, even with their 99 cent books. Have you heard of R.J. Lewis? OMG
And yesterday I one clicked a bundle by T.E. Sivec, that I know is going to be amazing, 4 books for 99 cents. Let’s face it, most books have a shelf life. And if adding a 99 cent deal drums up the hype then I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
Here is the thing about free books and sales, I might not take a chance on an author and then I will pick them up for 99 cents or even free. I read Nicole Williams Eden Trilogy, the first book was free, then because I loved it, I have bought and loved ten of her other books. Ten! It’s a brilliant marketing strategy. It’s like here’s a taste, I know you are going to want more, and then you do. And if you don’t no harm no foul.
How can anyone think all that’s being put out is unoriginal. Are there some bad books out there? Sure. That’s why we all have opinions and things we like and we don’t like, but I’m not going to say hey this is free or a deal dissuades me because if it’s cheap then it must not be good. WHAT THIS IS CRAZY TALK!!!
I also want to say, don’t let this idea of there are too many books right now stop your dream of writing. Ignore it all and work on your novel. There are more original ideas. Even if your book is about a Rocker. Are there a ton of Rocker books? Yes, but you can make it your own and special.
Here is something else, since I just read Nocte, I have to tell you, I found half a dozen little errors, like it was supposed to say ask but it said as. And do you know what?? It didn’t take away from the awesome story one bit. I think if we love something a few errors makes no difference at all. It doesn’t bother me.
I think something bigger is there is so much originality, that our likes are changing. We’ve been so spoiled we as readers expect that every-time. Will we always get it? Probably not. But I can assure you that this is not something new. Before Indie, there were book written that were poorly edited and uninteresting.
So let’s talk about it. What are some of the most original books you have read? Do you think there are still original ideas? Do you love that as a reader that there is so much to choose from?
I want to hear your thoughts, because after reading Nocte, it’s my firm belief that We ain’t seen nothing yet!
I love the Indie community! Keep on writing! Keep it positive! Keep putting out your amazing words. If you write it, they will come….
Excellent points made in this article. I know there are many sides to this argument, but I agree that the $.99 deals allow you to try out new authors and genres.
