About Naughty Books
No one was prepared for the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. Originally written in 2010 as a piece of Twilight fan fiction and posted online, it eventually sold over 100 million copies, taking erotica mainstream. But women didn’t only read erotica in large numbers; they also wrote it. In the aftermath of Fifty Shades a cottage industry emerged around self-published romance novels. Once women who worked forty-hour-a-week jobs, living paycheck-to-paycheck, many of them are now New York Times bestselling authors with their own merchandise lines and die-hard fans. Naughty Books follows three such women: an Air Force vet, a telemarketer, and a hospital administrator who became millionaires in under a year by using pen names to sell erotica online. They garnered thousands of fans and secured lucrative book deals with major publishing houses by writing about good girls and bad boys finding love and having steamy sex. However, as more and more people saw writing erotic romance as a quick path to money and fame, the market became saturated with hundreds of romance novels published every month, making success difficult to maintain…
Naughty Books will be available to rent on October 13th across digital, cable, and satellite platforms.

Sandy’s Review
There is no doubt that the catalyst for the popularity of new adult, erotica, mommy porn, whatever you want to call it, is 50 Shades of Grey by EL James. Critics panned it but readers loved it. The fandom may have died down somewhat but the love is huge. Needless to say, it is here to stay.
We learn that romance outsells everything else but we don’t typically see these authors on television not do we know most of their names – except for huge names like Danielle Steele or Nora Roberts.
A few of my favorite authors are part of this documentary, Laurelin Paige, Colleen Hoover, a hysterical cameo by Tara Sivec. Various clips of Leah and Bea Koch, owners of The Ripped Bodice.
The film heavily highlights the journeys of CJ Roberts, Kelli Maine, and Kristen Proby. All of them have published very popular best sellers and had huge success in the field. What a treat to see how things work from the perspective of the publishers, agents, and authors. The ups, downs, and the evolution of the fans who think of them as no fewer rock stars than those on stage with guitars.
So what happens when your books are no longer selling like hotcakes? Or when real life gets in the way of your writing career? That is one of the viewpoints we get in Naughty Books. The real deal and its not always pretty but man it was interesting. People make choices and those choices aren’t just related to consumer appetites. Marriages, careers, children are all in play.
Personally, I never met Kelli Maine but loved her book Taken, and liked the series. The gorgeous cover is one of my all-time favorites to this day. CJ Robert’s books are dark. However, her personality sparkled and reached across the room to you. Come back CJ! Kristen Proby is one of my favorite authors. She is a sweetheart to all her readers that stand in very long lines to meet her. Thankfully she is still writing the kind of stuff that I and many others love to read.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 has made it impossible to have a girl’s night/watch party with your book nerd friends and many glasses of wine. You can still Zoom, right?
Naughty Books is worth watching and I recommend you do.
