An Off-Limits Romance Standalone
Stephanie’s 3.5 Blush Review
The Plan is book four in the Off Limits series. It can be read as a standalone.
Unexpected. Angsty. Secrets. Second chances. Love. Hate. Anguish. It was not the book I expected. The Plan is told in four parts. A virtual roller coaster for part one of the book. The relationship between Marley and Gabe is volatile and seems almost beyond repair. But there is a fine line between love and hate.
There are secrets and misunderstandings that have led Marley and Gabe to where they are today. The small town of Fate has many memories for both Marley and Gabe. Once upon a time Marley and Gabe married while on a school trip to Vegas….
Almost no one here in Fate knows Gabe and I were together for two years right after high school. Our marriage and divorce were both expunged from public record shortly after he found fame.
Twelve years later, Marley is a successful pediatrician and Gabe is an extremely famous author.
Marley and Gabe have both returned to Fate but for different reasons. Marley needs to help her mom and Gabe is in hiding from the public scandal that has found him. Their painful past is front and center as they end up renting rooms in the same house.
Marley witnesses Gabe’s anguish over losing custody of his “daughter” and something changes. She see his vulnerable side. One that she hasn’t seen before. Gabe has had so many of his own demons to deal with. His dad was an alcoholic and he followed right behind him.
Marley has her own struggles. Her insecurities of being left by her father when she was five years old. Although he died, Marley overheard her mom state the he “didn’t want to stay”. This leaves her feeling like she doesn’t matter.
“I’m scared….that I’m forgettable.” The word is broken. “That’s what every girl fears most, don’t let anyone tell you different. I don’t want to be that girl that doesn’t matter, the one that’s not worth it.”
Marley wants to be a mom. And at age thirty three, the clock is ticking. She feels desperate and hopeless.
Gabe, oh Gabe. Strong, brooding, intense, sensitive, and….broken. His fame as an author has given him many things including wealth. But the one thing he loved the most is torn away. His life, scattered on “Page Six”. He flees to Fate to ride things out, gain perspective and hopefully regroup with a new plan.
The relationship between Marley and Gabe is turbulent. After witnessing Gabe’s anguish, Marley comforts him and they become intimate. That spark ignites a flame. One that they thought had been long extinguished. And a “plan” is formulated.
The Plan is book three in the Off Limits series. I have not read any of the other books so I am not sure if there is more of a background or foundation for Marley and Gabe. This is not quite a romantic story. There are many issues like alcoholism, infertility, infidelity, and loss.
The story and the blurb are very different. The story wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t what I was expecting.
