#GraphicNovel~~Championess by Kelly Zekas and Tarun Shanker
Championess
An exciting new YA original graphic novel, Championess, is based on the true story of Elizabeth Wilkinson, a young female bare-knuckle boxer in 18th Century London.
From writers Kelly Zekas and Tarun Shanker (authors of the YA Historical Paranormal Romance series, These Vicious Masks), Championess tells the captivating untold story of Wilkinson, reimagined as half-Indian, as she confronts her personal demons of what destroyed her family, while also pursuing her passion of boxing and coming to terms with being the first half-Indian female boxer in a white male world.
Alex’s 4 Blush Review
One thing I love is a story about a strong female character, and Championess has the bonus of being about a real-life strong woman. Prior to reading this graphic novel I had never heard of Elizabeth Wilkinson, and usually history/biographies are not my chosen genre, however reading about her story in graphic novel format was easy, fun, and entertaining! Liz’s relationship with her sister Tess, and her willingness to do whatever she could to help and protect her, was so relatable to me as an older sister. I also loved how determined she was and how she never backed down.
In addition to a gripping story and real-life characters to cheer on, Championess has some amazing artwork. The chapter pages included some really awesome designs that broke up the story nicely. I do wish a little that the interior art was in color, however I think that keeping it black and white really allows the reader to focus on the story and it’s characters, which isn’t a bad thing!
Overall, if you’re like me and don’t usually lean towards biographical novels, maybe give this biographical graphic novel a try instead! It’s all the information you would get in a regular book, with the added bonus of some fantastic artwork.
