No one knows what happens tomorrow…
When Brooke Adams suffers the unimaginable, she knows her heart will never be whole again. Faced with the choice of giving in to her grief, or fighting to regain a resemblance to the life she once knew, she chooses to fight.
Not ready to give up, Brooke starts a new life where no one knows her past. As she slowly puts the pieces of her life back together, Brooke meets her neighbor, Tyler Reynolds. Soon, he becomes her friend, her rock…
and her complicated constant.
Despite her best efforts, she finds herself falling for him, but what will happen if Tyler learns the truth about her past and realizes just how deep the damage is?
The risk might be too much…
After dinner, we take Charlie out for a walk. I love our casual walks at night with my arms wrapped around this handsome man.
“I…uh…I have something to tell you. I’m a little nervous, so can you please hear me out without interrupting me?”
Tyler stops dead in his tracks, letting go of my waist. “All right…but why are you nervous? You know you can tell me anything, right?”
Biting my lip nervously, I nod. I wish his words calmed my nerves this time, but they don’t. “Please. Don’t interrupt, just listen. We’ve been seeing each other for a couple of months now and things have been amazing, so I wanted to tell you that I…I’m…”
Oh, damn it, Brooke. Spit it out already!
With his signature devilish grin, he teasingly cocks his brow, trying to appear puzzled by my statement.
This is so embarrassing. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.
“Ready? I’m not sure I understand? What exactly is it that you’re ready for?”
Ass! He knows exactly what I mean. I elbow him in the side as my face turns fifty shades of embarrassed. “Jerk! You know exactly what I’m trying to say.”
His grin grows bigger, telling me he’s enjoying my discomfort. Reaching for me, he pulls me towards his chest. “Sweetheart, I’m sure I know exactly what you mean, but I wanna hear you say it. I want to hear the words come out of your gorgeous lips.”
He’s really gonna make me beg. “I’m ready for us to…you know…for us to…be together.” I cover my face with my hands. I’m ready to crawl under a rock now.
Pushing me back from his chest, he eyes me with such tenderness. “Can we please take this conversation home? I really don’t feel like talking about making love to my girlfriend in front of the homeless dude here,” he says, motioning to the man sleeping in the doorway of the shop we happened to stop in front of. I nod in embarrassed agreement as Tyler leans in to kiss the side of my head. “Hey, you have nothing to be embarrassed about.”

What a debut novel by Elle Michaels! She expertly handles the tragic experience faced by Brooke with compassion, heart, and probably a few glasses of wine while writing those moments that required tissues nearby! I think this is one of those stories that will touch the emotions of anyone that reads it, with its grief, pain, and sadness balanced with a sense of light and hope and love. Brooke faced a hugely tragic event 4 years before this story really takes off, one that has altered her life in so many ways – from picking up and moving states away from her home to leaving behind family to making new friends after settling in. Two of which are Jenna, her best friend, and Tyler, her neighbor and very good friend.
Elle Michaels took me on a journey with Brooke as she seeks to find peace and comfort. Tyler is her hot as hell neighbor who harbors some very deep emotions for Brooke and is ready to move their relationship forward even though Brooke is reluctant. I would have loved just a bit more of Tyler’s background and his current world to give me a stronger sense of his personality. He seems to be the perfect half to Brooke with his calm demeanor, depth of emotion, and dirty talkin’ mouth. I also really loved the relationship with Jenna. Her role enhanced the story by adding the friend dimension that is a needed component of Brooke’s world and opening up to finding peace. And the story of friendship would not be complete without Charlie. He can give me kisses any time! 🙂
Overall, this is a story that took me on a healing journey for Brooke. It’s not easy all the time, but there are moments of sunshine beaming through the dark days that give hope to Brooke’s ability to recover and move forward. I’m looking forward to what Elle gives us next!

Nicole’s 3.5 star review
Sometimes, you read a book and it pulls you in. You find that you are right there with the characters. Other times, you find yourself more of a spectator than a participant. Both have their merits. Being a spectator can allow a reader to feel only as much as you want, or can handle. While reading Elle Michaels’ What Happens Tomorrow, I found this to be the case.
As the story opens, Brooke Adams is forced to face unspeakable tragedy. The kind of tragedy that can leave someone devastated and broken. The kind of tragedy that can bring someone so low that the easiest way to deal with it is to crawl into yourself and your grief and not want to come out. Brooke lives like this for years until she realizes that this isn’t how she wants to live anymore. With great courage, she decides that a change in location could be the first step to getting on with life. In the process of reclaiming her self, she finds friendship, and eventually love.
Tyler Reynolds’ first encounter with Brooke was nothing short of a hot mess. She collides into him while carrying a hot coffee! He takes in stride as he is completely taken by her. Turns out that Tyler and Brooke live in the same apartment complex, but have yet to meet. What happens after that is the start of a friendship that moves into a lovely relationship. Tyler is good for Brooke in that he is attentive and pushes her boundaries. Brooke finds this combination to be exactly what she needs to move on with her life.
I liked this book. The premise of the story…of getting a second chance and what you choose to do with it…is very appealing to me. The idea that life can put exactly what you need right in front of you at the exact right time is something that many can relate to. I know I can! I know that it can take tripping over it a few times to really notice what it is and why it’s there. I felt that way about Brooke. Tyler was right there in front of her, offering her what she could have and what she needed, but it took her a while to grab it. It gave Brooke the courage to move on from her grief, free from guilt and shame. It gave her a second chance!
I give What Happens Tomorrow 3.5 stars.
