Dawn’s Review: 3 Stars
Intense, erotic, and captivating. This is book 2 in The Protege series and I read both books back to back. I’m going to review both together here. For me, they were quick reads with a feeling that they fall somewhere between a novella and a novel. These were my first books to have read by Kailin Gow so if you are a Kailin Gow fan, I will not be able to make comparisons to any of her other works.
In The Innocent, it essentially picks up right where The Protege left off. After reading the first book, I was very intrigued to know what was going to happen between Serena, Sebastian, and Price. In the first book, I was engaged with Serena’s and Sebastian’s story and then ‘wham!’, something completely unexpected was thrown into the mix and left me wondering where the hell this story was going to go and how it would all end. Without giving a lot of details away because I think it would be easy to spoil it that way, I will just say I was surprised with the turn of events and the further unveiling of the characters’ personalities that I wasn’t quite expecting. That continued in The Innocent as I was taken further into the minds of the three main characters.
Let’s talk about the main characters: Sebastian is dark and yummy with a deep passion that is expressed through his music and through his interactions with Serena. He’s one you just want to take a little bite of! I have to say, he surprised me in Book 2. Serena, she is still quite a mystery to me. There are so many layers to her that I’m not sure have even been revealed (possibly in book 3?). And her responses with both Sebastian and Price, while they may be difficult to understand, slowly begin to make sense. Then there is Price. He’s sexuality personified, but at what price must be paid to be in his world? I love to hate him yet I also feel drawn to him.
I found the use of secondary characters, such as Willow, and Sebastian’s parents were handled very well. They added just enough intriguing information in their engagements with Serena or Sebastian to keep me guessing what more is going to be revealed.
If anything, I want more! More understanding of what makes each person tick and what brought them to their particular place. More depth to the characters so I could have a deeper emotional investment in them. More sex! (Oh wait, that’s pretty good!).
Overall, both are fast reads that have me wondering what will happen next but also left me with wanting a bit more. Yet, maybe that’s part of the process of understanding these characters through a slower build and further unveiling of the mystery surrounding each one.
