For nineteen-year-old Ember, life has always been about death. With a simple touch, she can see when someone will die. It’s her curse and the reason she secludes herself from the world. The only person that knows her secret is her best friend Raven.
But that changes when she meets Asher Morgan. He’s gorgeous and mysterious and is the only person Ember can’t sense death from. The silence he instills in her mind and body allows her to feel things she’s never been able to before, so despite her initial reservations, Ember lets Asher into her life and lets herself to get close to him. But the closer they get, the more Ember realizes that Asher is keeping secrets from her.
When unexplained deaths begin to surface in her town, Ember questions why she can’t see Asher’s death and what it is he’s hiding from her.
He sweeps a strand of my hair back and tucks it behind my ear, a reminder that I don’t have to fear his touch; that his contact only brings solace, not sorrow.
“Do you know some believe that the eyes are the window to the soul?” he asks softly.
I arch my eyebrows. “You know that’s a pick-up line, right?”
His intense expression is breathtaking as he cups my cheek and grazes his thumb along my cheekbone. The feel of his skin against mine sends tingles all over my body and fills me with feelings I’ve never experienced before because they can only come through contact.
“It is now, but a long time ago people used to believe that a person’s eyes gave insight to one’s soul. It showed what they were really feeling and their vulnerability.” He slowly traces his finger below my eyes. “You have beautiful eyes, but there’s so much sadness in them.”
I swallow the lump in my throat and focus on his lips. Dear God Almighty, he has such luscious lips.
“Ember,” he whispers like he’s known me forever, temporarily unhitching the chains that bind me to every single person’s death. It’s strange, but invigorating. “I want to kiss you.” His voice drops to a husky whisper as he leans in. “Please tell me I can kiss you… God please just say it.”
“Yes…” I breathe, not truly realizing what I’m saying. That after nineteen years of intential solitude I’ll finally get kissed.
He closes his eyes, leaning closer, and I inhale deeply. My heart thumps vigorously in my chest as his lips get closer and then our lips touch.
A groan instantly slips through my lip at the sensation of heat his kiss brings throughout my body. It only gets worse when slides his tongue between my lips and I open up, letting him in, tangling my tongue with his and tracing the tip along his lip ring.
Dawn’s Review 4.5 Stars
Ember X had me on a phenomenal, captivating journey into Ember’s world and her attempt at understanding what is happening to her as the unusual occurrences that surround her life are escalating. Initially, I felt confused during the first 20% or so of the story as I tried to figure out who’s who and what exactly is going on. I was constantly hunting for clues among the twists and turns of Ember’s story. Once I started putting the pieces together, I couldn’t put the book down!
This is a re-imagining of Ember as a New Adult book from its original YA version. I didn’t read the YA version so I cannot compare them. What I will say is that Jessica Sorensen captures a sense of mystery and otherworldliness in Ember X and I was able to escape fully into the story. As a NA version, there are plenty of steamy scenes that get your heart racing and girly parts excited! Asher and Cameron are both swoon worthy and downright sexy. Moments between Asher and Ember or Cameron and Ember were downright hot!
The other secondary characters like her bestie, Raven, Ember’s brother, Laden, and others added further to the mystery and dark, twisty-turny nature of this story. Raven gave me whiplash so many times I couldn’t tell which way was up with that girl. That’s all part of the fascination of trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
I loved a fascinating paranormal that draws me in and keeps me there until the very last page, and that is what I got with Ember X. This one didn’t leave me on a cliffhanger, but it did leave me desperate to know what happens next. I can’t wait for Cinder X to continue Ember’s journey.
