Louisa’s 4 Blush Review
Paullina Simons has once again intrigued me with a story that isn’t my “typical read”. I have never read a historical romance until The Bronze Horseman and it’s one of my all-time favorite series, who would have thunk it? Not me.
Now she has given me a book that isn’t just a typical romance but a romance with a “sorta” twist. Another epic romance that will stay with me for a long time. A story that has me sucked in and waiting for the next installment.
The slow burn of their relationship kept me reading, the details in the book kept me captivated. (this is one thing I love about Paullina’s writing, her descriptions of the world around her character is specific and precise that I was transformed to their lives while reading, a fly on the wall watching the interactions of the characters). To me, this is what makes a beautiful and fascinating story. And once again – Paullina has seized my attention and admiration.

Q&A WITH PAULLINA SIMONS
BBAUAN: What was your inspiration for this story/series?
PAULLINA: I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of second chances. That’s one of the themes I wanted to explore in the End of Forever What if you had suffered a terrible loss and got a chance to make things right? Would you take it? Would you take it, even if you knew you it might mean the loss of everything else that was important to you? What would you give up to get your second chance, in which the outcome was uncertain?
I wanted to write about a man who was given such an opportunity, a man who fell in love with a woman, and lost her, and then turned the world upside down to find her again.
BBAUAN: Have you always been a writer? Was this your dream when you were little?
PAULLINA: Yes, this has always been my dream even when I was a girl growing up an only child in Russia. Especially then. I had nothing but my dreams and my books.
BBAUAN: Who inspires you as a writer?
PAULLINA: Things that give me all the feels inspire me. When I read, often I just want to feel something. I don’t approach my reading intellectually, though it is always a bonus when books have layers of meaning that are there if you want to peel away at them. But the main thing for me is to feel something in the books I read and the movies I see. As a result, I only want to write the kind of books that I myself want to read.
BBAUAN: What’s the last book you read?
PAULLINA: The last book I read was The Hobbit.
BBAUAN: What are some of your favorite books? Some of my favorite books are
PAULLINA: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov and the Brothers Karamazov,by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
BBAUAN: Any chance you want to give us a sneak peek into the next book?
PAULLINA: NO! Okay, fine. Here you go:
BBAUAN: The unbelievable success of The Bronze Horseman brought so many people into Historical romance that had never read it before (like me), was that your intention or were you surprised by this? The love story was epic and timeless and could be one of the best romances ever written.
PAULLINA: Thank you for your kind words. I would like to sound smart and say that getting people interested in historical fiction had been a part of my plan. However, the process wasn’t nearly as thoughtful. As I suspect many writers are, I tend to be a slave to my stories. In the case of The Bronze Horseman, it started with an image of a soldier and a girl on the streets of Leningrad during the war. The image was quite vivid. And though I didn’t know their story yet, I saw Tatiana and Alexander in my mind’s eye. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I found their path in the forest. From this image, their story grew into something real. Their real and imagined journey kept me going for five books, a non-fiction memoir, a cookbook, a screenplay and a teleplay. And I still had something new to say about it in my 2015 novel Lone Star. All from that initial image of a soldier and a girl walking alone at night through a war-torn city.
